Module 3

Primary and Secondary Prevention of VBDs

Overview

This module provides a comprehensive overview of Lyme disease, focusing on epidemiology, prevention, early clinical recognition, and public health management. The patterns of transmission, particularly the role of blacklegged ticks as vectors and the seasonal dynamics influencing infection risk, will be explored. The module emphasizes accurate identification of ticks, effective removal techniques, and appropriate follow-up procedures. Preventive measures are covered, including personal protective behaviours and environmental control strategies to reduce tick exposure and habitats. The module highlights the critical role of early detection and prompt treatment in preventing complications. Additionally, learners will gain an understanding of federal, provincial, and territorial public health protocols, reporting requirements, and community engagement strategies essential for managing Lyme disease in endemic areas.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the epidemiology and transmission of Lyme disease, including vector and seasonal patterns.
  • Identify blacklegged ticks and describe proper tick removal methods and follow-up procedures.
  • Recognize the early signs and symptoms of Lyme disease (e.g., erythema migrans, fever, fatigue, joint pain).
  • Discuss proper use of personal protective measures (e.g., tick repellents, protective clothing, body checks) to reduce tick exposure.
  • Identify high-risk environments and describe environmental control measures (e.g., landscaping, tick control on pets) to reduce tick habitats.
  • Identify diagnostic tests used for confirmation of Lyme disease.
  • Identify strategies to increase community awareness of and strategies for patient education on Lyme disease prevention in endemic areas.
  • Discuss the importance of early diagnosis and timely treatment to prevent complications. Explain the public health protocols and requirements for reporting and managing suspected Lyme disease cases.
