CASN Works with Haitians to Establish an Approval Program for Schools of Nursing

In September 2013, CASN began a project to establish standards for nursing education programs and to revise the process of approval in Haiti.

Improving Nursing Education in Haiti by Strengthening Quality Standards

“To improve nursing education in Haiti, the USAID-funded Health Financing and Governance (HFG) project is working closely with the Ministry of Health or Ministère de la Santé Publique et de la Population to strengthen its ability to manage an effective standards-based quality system for nursing educational institutions. This system is known as “reconnaissance.” In particular, HFG is working with the Département de Formation et de Perfectionnement des Sciences de la Santé (DFPSS) or the Department of Training and Development for Health Sciences, which is the MOH unit responsible for nursing education.”

In 2017, officials from the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) of the United States signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA). Both organizations are recognized as accrediting agencies for registered nursing education in their respective counties. Both organizations acknowledge that although the forms of accreditation are not interchangeable because of some differences, each party fully recognizes the credibility of the accreditation process of the other.

Accredited International Programs

Only baccalaureate nursing programs successful in achieving accreditation status from the CASN Accreditation Bureau, and within the term limit of the accreditation status granted, are eligible to state that they are a “CASN accredited program”. Any other use of the term without written CASN approval will result in legal action.

Standards and Framework

The CASN Accreditation Program is guided by core values and fundamental principles. Its Standards are divided into two sets; one applies to the School of Nursing itself, referred to as the Educational Unit, and the other applies to the Nursing Education Program. In addition, the Program provides two Accreditation Paths: Path A is a two-stage process for new programs or new collaborations, whereas Path B is a single-stage process for existing programs.
