Note: Participants must complete the two foundational modules and one advanced module to complete the Simulation Certificate Program.

Description:

Advanced Module-Scholarship focuses on competencies 5 and 6, which address the post-experience phase of a simulation-based experience. Participants will demonstrate their knowledge and appropriate evaluation of participants and the simulation-based learning activity. They will also show how a nurse educator with expertise in simulation participates and contributes to the larger learning simulation instructor community, both in Canada and globally.

Participants will develop foundational skills in simulation scholarship and communities of practice. Emphasis is placed on exploring evaluation of simulation, including incorporating assessment methods for quality improvement and scholarship. This advanced module will build on the evaluation and scholarship concepts introduced in Module 1. Examining various forms of evaluation and identifying their best uses depending on participants level, learning objectives and intended outcomes. Differentiating reliable and valid instruments and methods for incorporating them in a way that minimizes bias and allows for transparency with learners regarding their participation and the use of results.

This module will explore simulationists’ role in appraising simulation-based research and evidence. It will introduce methods of advancing the science of simulation and potential communities of practice for developing these skills. Professional development activities will be outlined and will adhere to the practice guidelines and principles of the Healthcare Simulationist Code of Ethics.

As a continuation of the foundational modules, this advanced module prepares participants to begin their own professional journey as simulation leaders, practitioners, researchers, and educators. It also supports readiness for the CCSNE examination by expanding on some of the key domains related to scholarship and evaluation.

  2. Evaluate participants according to the learning objectives and intended outcomes of the simulation.
  3. Select valid, reliable, and relevant evaluation instruments for outcome measurement.
  4. Share clear, appropriate, constructive, and timely formative feedback to support learning.
  5. Provide discrete, constructive, and timely summative feedback in a safe learning environment.
  6. Provide learner-centred feedback that respects privacy, equity, diversity, and inclusivity.
  7. Appraise research and evidence related to simulation-based education.
  8. Mentor others in simulation-based education scholarship.
  9. Participate in simulation activities and initiatives to advance the science of simulation.
  10. Disseminate information to advance the science of simulation and improve educational practices.
  11. Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance one’s own knowledge, practice, and expertise.
  12. Model the practice guidelines and principles of the Healthcare Simulationist Code of Ethics.
