Note: Participants must complete the two foundational modules and one advanced module to complete the Simulation Certificate Program.
Description:
This advanced module prepares simulation nurse educators to design, facilitate, debrief, and evaluate simulation-based experiences that develop interprofessional collaboration. Building on foundational knowledge of simulation design and facilitation, participants examine how professional cultures, roles, power relationships, and team processes influence learning with, from, and about other professions.
The CIHC Competency Framework for Advancing Collaboration (2024) provides the organizing framework. Participants apply its six interdependent domains to shared learning outcomes, authentic team tasks, inclusive prebriefing, interprofessional facilitation, and team-based debriefing. Particular attention is given to meaningful participation by persons receiving care and their care partners, differences in learner preparation, constructive disagreement, and shared decision-making.
Short presentations, whole-group discussion, and small-group case discussions support the application of course concepts to educational and practice settings.

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants will have developed the following competencies:
- Apply theoretical perspectives on experiential and social learning to explain how interprofessional simulation supports collaborative practice.
- Use the CIHC 2024 framework to develop observable, shared learning outcomes that reflect a specific collaboration need.
- Critically examine the effects of professional culture, hierarchy, role assumptions, and unequal participation on interprofessional learning.
- Co-design an authentic simulation with educators or practitioners from another profession that requires interdependence and includes the perspective of persons receiving care and care partners.
- Develop inclusive preparation and prebriefing strategies that address differing learner levels, role expectations, psychological safety, and accessibility.
- Apply facilitation strategies that support role negotiation, shared leadership, speaking up, and constructive processing of disagreement.
- Demonstrate team-based debriefing approaches that invite multiple perspectives and connect individual contributions with team processes.
- Justify methods for assessing individual and team learning, distinguishing formative assessment from summative and high-stakes decisions.
Develop a feasible implementation and evaluation plan, using feedback and reflection to improve interprofessional simulation practice.
