Description

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming health care and education, and nurse educators face the pressing challenge of designing assessments that are both authentic and academically rigorous in an AI-rich world. This continuing education course equips nurse educators with practical frameworks and strategies for integrating AI tools including Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and NotebookLM into the design of meaningful, valid, and engaging assessments.

Authentic assessment asks students to demonstrate competencies in ways that mirror real-world nursing practice. When thoughtfully paired with AI, these assessments can deepen critical thinking, promote AI health literacy, and prepare graduates for contemporary clinical environments. At the same time, educators must navigate concerns around academic integrity, equity of access, and the responsible use of AI.

Across four live online sessions, participants will build personal AI competency, explore the theoretical foundations of authentic assessment, examine a curated range of AI tools applicable to nursing education contexts, and collaboratively design or redesign assessment tasks suited to their own courses. Supported by Moodle-based resources, participants will leave with a personal toolkit of resources to build personal AI competency, sample assessment designs, and an evidence-informed approach to evaluating the impact of AI on student learning.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will have developed the following competencies:

  • Describe how AI influences authentic assessment and academic integrity in nursing education. 
  • Evaluate a range of AI tools for their application to equitable assessment design.
  • Co-create a rubric with peers and the support of AI that addresses academic integrity and equity of access in assessment.
  • Analyze examples of authentic assessment through a guided activity.
  • Design an authentic assessment task suited to one’s own course, for peer presentation.

Instructors

Laura Killam, RN, PhD

Laura Killam is a nurse educator with over 18 years of experience in nursing education. Laura is widely recognized for her expertise in innovative pedagogy, assessment design, and the integration of technology in nursing education. She has authored and co-authored numerous open educational resources and peer-reviewed articles related to nursing education including work specifically addressing authentic assessment and the use of digital tools in academic settings. Laura is an active voice in the national nursing education community and has presented at numerous conferences on the evolving landscape of teaching and assessment in the digital age. She holds deep familiarity with a range of AI and educational platforms including ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Moodle, and Blackboard, and regularly integrates these into her own teaching practice. Laura is committed to academic integrity and has developed practical frameworks to help educators balance the challenges of AI with the rigorous demands of nursing education.

Anila Virani, RN, PhD 

Anila Virani is an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at Thompson Rivers University. Anila brings expertise in digital health, health informatics, and nursing education, with a particular focus on how emerging technologies are shaping both clinical practice and professional preparation. Her scholarly work explores the intersection of digital literacy and authentic learning in nursing programs. Anila has practical experience designing and evaluating competency-based assessments in online and hybrid learning environments, and she is passionate about preparing nursing students for a digitally transformed health care system. She is well-versed in the responsible integration of AI tools into educational settings, with attention to issues of bias, access, and ethical use. She holds deep familiarity with a range of AI and educational platforms including ChatGPT, Copilot, Notebook LM, Perplexity, Moodle, and D2L, and regularly integrates these into her own teaching practice. Anila's clinical background in diverse health care contexts informs her approach to designing assessments that reflect the complexity of real-world nursing practice.


Policies 

Cancellations

  • Registrations that are cancelled up to one week before the start of the course will be refunded minus a $50 administrative fee.
  • Registrations that are cancelled with less than one week’s notice will not be refunded, though the participant will have the option to defer the cost of the course to apply to another CNEI/CASN course.
  • There will be no refunds issued once the course begins.
  • CASN reserves the right to cancel this course if it does not meet minimal group requirements.

Course Content

  •  Participants are responsible for access to any course materials, including articles and textbooks.
  • There will be no make-up assignments accepted. 
  • Assignments will not be re-marked.
  • Late submissions will not be accepted, unless under exceptional circumstances.
