CASN Abortion Care Modules Announcement
The Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) is pleased to announce the launch of 3 online modules that will serve as a teaching and learning resource on abortion care in Canada. The modules were designed as a resource that can be used broadly by nursing professionals in practice and education that would like to increase capacity in this area, and for nursing students. The learning outcomes in the modules link directly to and support attainment of the Entry-to-Practice Abortion Care Competencies for Undergraduate Nursing and Nurse Practitioner Education Framework
The content presented in the Abortion Care Modules intends to support access to abortion for under-served populations. These modules inform learners of the context of abortion care in Canada and ways to mitigate or remove those barriers. Module 1, (Addressing Systemic and Structural Barriers and Promoting Equity), explores theoretical frameworks related to equity and justice in reproductive health care. Module 2 (Legal and Regulatory Framework of Abortion Care in Canada) provides an outline of the legal status, protections, and contemporary regulations surrounding abortion services in Canada. Module 3 (Medication and Procedural Abortion Care) discusses the role and scope of registered nurses (RNs) and nurse practitioners (NPs) as it relates to the provision of medication and procedural abortion care.
Launching in October – CASN Abortion Care Modules
These modules are part of the project titled “Advancing access to abortion for under-served populations through tools for healthcare professionals and people seeking care”. This project is a component of the University of British Columbia initiative “The Contraception and Abortion Research Team (CART) Access Project: Advancing access to abortion for under-served populations through tools for healthcare professionals and people seeking care”. Production of this resource has been made possible through a financial contribution from Health Canada. The views expressed herein do not necessarily represent the views of Health Canada.
