Canadian Nursing Education Database
CASN is proposing the creation of a national database on nursing education that is interactive and accessible for schools, researchers, and organizations. CASN is the ideal partner for this activity as we already hold a) a secure national infrastructure, b) direct relationships with schools of nursing, and c) a substantial amount of data through the annual survey of nursing schools. While CASN will initially target the survey data, program quality and continuous improvement data may be explored with member schools at a later stage.
Process:
- (spring 2026) Gather endorsement from schools of nursing and CASN members
- (spring 2026) Call for expressions of interest for co-investigators to contribute to grant writing and project development
- (summer 2026) Write the grant application
- (2027) If the application is successful, the first steps will be to
- Map existing data held by CASN;
- Identify indicators that are meaningful to partner organizations;
- Explore whether accreditation data—used only in ways agreed upon with partners—could contribute to benchmarking, quality improvement, or research;
- Develop requirements for data governance and safety;
- Build a proof of concept, starting small with intentional, careful growth.
Further steps would be to apply for a larger grant to build the database, populate it, and create an interface for engagement.
Value:
- To researchers: A national dataset to answer pressing questions in nursing
- To schools and programs: Benchmarking and quality improvement
