Standing Committee on Education
 

Mandate

To fulfill the responsibility of the CASN’s mission for promoting excellence and advancing innovation in nursing education to reflect changes in the Canadian society.

Terms of Reference

  • To develop and advance policy position statements and guidelines regarding undergraduate and graduate nursing education and the preparation and renewal of the academic nursing workforce. (SD-2)
  • To represent the needs and vision of academic nursing in national submissions and statements. (SD-1.1, 1.3)
  • To anticipate and respond to national proposals relating to, or with potential to affect, nursing education. (SD-1.1, 1.3)
  • To advocate for funding to support nursing education. (SD-2.7)
  • To hold forums and conferences for CASN’s members on issues related to nurse education. (SD-2.7.3)
  • To forward relevant issues to the Board of Accreditation as required. (SD-2.10)
  • To recommend to the Board the establishment of Ad Hoc/Task Forces working parties
  • There shall be regular communications between the Chair of the Standing Committee and its respective Task Forces.
  • To report to the Board of Directors and Council meeting annually.

Term of Office and Membership

The term of office is two (2) years and voting members of the Committee are:

  • The Chair, appointed from within the Board
  • One member who is engaged in undergraduate nursing education, appointed by the Board
  • One member who is engaged in graduate nursing education (ie at Masters/PhD levels), appointed by the Board
  • One head of undergraduate nursing education, appointed by the Board
  • One head of graduate nursing education from the University sector, appointed by the Board
  • The President and the Executive Director will be ex-officio members

Meetings

The committee will normally meet by teleconference a minimum of twice per year and at other times, at the call of the Chair, to fulfill its mandate. Support for meetings and the work of the committee will be provided by an assigned National Office staff member.
