Task Force on Palliative Care
 
Mandate
To provide a forum for nurse educator input, and recommendations to the CASN Board of Directors for the development of inter–professional collaborative educational program guidelines for preparation of future health professionals in caring for and supporting clients and their families in need of palliative and end-of-life care.
Terms of Reference
To develop a nursing literature review related to palliative and end-of-life care. (SD-1.3)

To identify key nursing educational issues from the nursing literture review (SD-1.3)

To identify unique issues for nursing education in palliative and end-of-life care.

To review existing standards for palliative and end-of-life care in nursing and in other health disciplines.

To identify common standards across the health disciplines in palliative and end-of-life care. (SD-1.1, 1.3)

To participate with the inter-professional group associated with the Health Canada Initiative on Palliative and End-of-Life Care. (SD-2.4)

To develop inter-professional health professional education guidelines for preparation of graduates to provide palliative and end-of-life care.

To advocate for funding for palliative care education.

To report to the Board of Directors annually.

There shall be regular communications between the Chair of this Task Force and the Chair of the Standing Committee on Education through the CASN National Office staff.

To provide a report to the Board of Directors and Council.

Term of Office and Membership
The term of office will be at the discretion of the CASN Executive Committee. The voting members of the Task Force are:

The Chair of the Task Force will be selected from among the membership

CASN members with expertise in palliative care representing the Atlantic, Western, Ontario, and Quebec regions (8 in total)

An external representative of practice settings and diverse sectors

A member of the CASN Board of Directors will be appointed to serve as a communication linkage between the Task Force and the Board of Directors

The Chair of the Standing Committee on Education (ex-officio)

Meetings
The Task Force will normally meet by teleconference, a minimum of twice per year and at other times, at the call of the Chair, to fulfill its mandate. Support for meetings and the work of the Task Force will be provided by an assigned National Office staff member.
