Registered Nurses Education in Canada Statistics, 2009-2010.

2009-2010 report_en

The Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) and the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) are pleased to present Registered Nurses Education in Canada Statistics, 2009-2010.

This report supports effective health human resources planning by providing statistical analysis about:

  • the number of graduates eligible to apply for initial licensure/registration;
  • the number of registered nurses obtaining graduate qualifications;
  • the number of graduates from nurse practitioner programs;
  • innovations in nursing education program access and delivery;
  • the composition of faculty delivering nursing education;
  • and faculty retention, recruitment and leaves of absence.

Report Highlights:

  • A record high of 15,585 students were admitted to entry-to-practice programs in 2009-2010.
  • The number of entry-to-practice graduates surpassed 9,000 for the fourth year in a row, with more than 10,000 in 2009-2010.
  • A faculty shortage is looming due to an aging faculty workforce, widespread recruitment challenges, and the low numbers of masters and doctoral graduates.
