Clinical Teaching: Current Issues, Challenges and Strategies

Dates: January 19 and 20, 2012

Location: The Faculty Club, University of Toronto, 41 Willcocks Street, Toronto

Course Description: This 2 day course for clinical instructors and nurse educators will focus on theoretical understandings related to clinical teaching and learning; as well as strategies to promote student success in clinical environments. The increasing complexity of clinical environments for nursing student education provides unique challenges for seasoned and novice clinical teachers. Through presentations and group discussions, a team of experienced university based clinical educators will engage participants in exploring the most current thinking regarding the scholarship of clinical education and its practice in various settings including acute care, community and long term care. While the focus and exemplars of teaching in this course will be drawn from the context of undergraduate nursing education, advanced practice nurses and nurse educators from all health care settings with an interest in deepening their theoretical understanding of nursing education and learning will benefit from this foundational course.

Throughout the 2 day course, participants will have the opportunity to interact and network with other attendees. Attendees will receive a certificate of completion.

Participants: nurses who are either experienced, novice or aspiring clinical teachers; advanced practice nurses and nurse educators

Course Objectives:

1. To understand the conceptual and experiential foundations of clinical teaching;

2. To understand competencies essential to facilitate optimal student learning;

3. To understand common complex student situations an strategies to foster student success;

4. To discuss strategies to foster student learning in challenging clinical contexts;

5. To discuss creative clinical teaching methods to stimulate clinical reasoning, self reflection and critical thinking skills in clinical situations.

National Institute on Nursing Informatics

Dates: February 3, 4 & 5, 2012

Course Description: The inaugural National Institute on Nursing Informatics will be led by Dr. Lynn Nagle from the Lawrence S. Bloomberg, Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto and supported by a number of guest faculty from across Canada. This 3 day institute will provide a focused educational opportunity for nurses interested in learning more about informatics. The program will be of particular interest to nurse educators responsible for the integration of informatics into entry level nursing programs, nursing practice leaders, or nurses currently working in or considering a future career in informatics. Participants will be equipped with sufficient foundational knowledge to be able to effectively participate in informatics related operational and educational discussions and activities in their work settings.

Participants will benefit from the extensive practical, academic, and research knowledge and experience of the faculty who will teach in the institute. The curriculum will cover a broad range of topics with content being covered through a combination of didactic presentations, small and large group discussions, and independent study.

Topics to be covered will include:

· History and evolution of informatics in nursing

· Strategic planning

· Structure and function of clinical information systems

· Nursing data standards

· Human factors considerations

· Organizational transformation

· Clinician engagement

· Evaluating information and communication technologies

· Informatics in nursing education and curriculum integration

· Protection of personal health information

· Consumer informatics, telemedicine and information

· Use of social media in healthcare

· Current issues and challenges for nurse leaders
