Award for Excellence in Nursing Research 2010

Dr. Cameron has an influential program of participatory research with Aboriginal communities in Canada and health care professionals and people in palliative care in Canada and Chile. In the last four years she has received over $3 million in research funding for 7 studies as principal or co-investigator. As a co-investigator of Alberta funding ACADRE NEARH Network, she has led the Access to Health Care Service Research Initiative since its beginnings. This initiative has evolved into several projects to improve access to primary health care for Aboriginal people and inner city residents. In addition, she has added an international component involving a partnership with Indigenous people in Chile and Uganda, and primary health care professionals in Chile.

Brenda’s work in delineating the qualities of nursing as revealed in the practice of nursing has its place as a hallmark event in nursing literature where she worked to articulate the unsayable, what is it that inheres in nursing. Much of this work is used in undergraduate nursing curricula in western Canada and for graduate student courses in discussing what is nursing. Her ability to be highly relevant and current in practice as well as her innovative teaching styles stem from this deep understanding and facility with articulating nursing as practiced. Brenda’s passion for the practicing nurse’s environment through philosophically questioning structural, economic and political factors influencing the nurses’ world continues to be paramount in her work.

Research and projects she has led have been pivotal to the establishment of the University of Alberta Health Services Initiative, culturally safe care in Emergency Departments, development of local and international preceptorship guidelines for ethical practices for Research with Aboriginal Peoples.
